1. It all began with a trip to Rajasthan:
I first discovered these beautiful handmade products as a 16 year old backpacking through the many wonders of Rajasthan. The vibrant colors and the mystique of this handmade art left me intrigued at the richness of the culture and amount of effort which had gone into creating these intricate designs.
2. A Christmas Miracle:
15 years later, it was Christmas 2013 when we had a few friends over at our small abode on the upper east side in Manhattan when they couldn’t stop raving about my Christmas presents which had come all the way from India. It was a handcrafted leather journal and a vibrant colored patchwork quilt. Each of them insisted that I must get them one on my next trip to India. The look of amazement at their face at the colorful artisanal pieces convinced me that everyone needs to experience these beautiful products.
3. The plunge into business:
In 2015, I packed my bags and decided to head to India to make my dream a reality. My childhood bedroom in Delhi became my first warehouse with products stacked up on my bed. 2 years later, we have customers in 52 countries and work with 100+ artisans across India and are expanding our reach to artisans in South America.

Who makes these products?
All our products are made by rural women in local self-help groups primarily in Rajasthan, India. Women at a very young age are taught knitting, traditional embroidery (e.g, Suzani) and other local crafting techniques (e.g., Tie-Dye). However, inspite of these skills, given Rajasthan’s patriarchal culture they are not able to leverage them besides at leisure for family members. Hence, while men work in the field, women were relegated to household chores occasionally knitting for family members.
KraftDirect is trying to change this by empowering women to generate their own income by leveraging the skills they have learned and putting them to use to create beautiful products for customers around the world and earning a fair price for them.
How do they reach me?
Every week, we buy products made by these artisans and store them in our warehouses in the US, and Australia from where they are shipped to our customers.
How do we make sure the artisans get their fair share?
KraftDirect is a for profit business, however with a focus on sustainability. For every product we buy from the we make sure that the artisans gets a fair wage for the effort based on the Fair Wage Guide Calculator. In addition, we provide the artisan with raw material (fabric, threads) design expertise and help in maintaining quality control.
